Advent-Christmas is a time-saving site for people who want to set aside special moments for devotions during this season. It is a time of anticipation and wonder. It sets into motion a time of planning and preparing for celebration.
A curious and wonderful thing about Advent is the Supernatural promise attached to it - the manifestation of the Christ child. It’s a time to prepare our hearts anew for receiving the spiritual arrival of that precious spirit in us. A time to look forward to maturing to the next level of Christ in us.
Like Lent-Easter, the readings will be guided by The Book of Common Prayer. Scripture references will be likened to The Revised Standard Version of the Bible. It is the prophet Isaiah’s description of this blessed event that has been put to timeless music - The Messiah:
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
And the apostle Paul writes
that we might receive wisdom and understanding, and that the eyes of our understanding will be opened. . . according to what God has done in Christ. See Ephesians 1:17-21
The Nativity film captures for me what Advent is about and what it might have been like for people in that time - the feeling of the events surrounding the coming of the Lord, Immanuel.
